SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Scottsdale police said they fatally shot a 45-year-old man wanted for questioning in past sex crimes after he fired at least one round at them Friday morning.

Police spokesman Officer David Pubins said detectives were attempting to make contact with Thomas Hawes as he drove southbound near 83rd Street and Vista Drive.

Hawes pulled over to the side of the road and detectives noticed he had a gun pointed at himself as he sat in his vehicle. Pubins said detectives began negotiations with him and treated the situation as a barricade.

Hawes then got out of his car and fired at the detectives, according to Pubins. They returned fire, striking the man. He died at the scene.

Five Scottsdale police detectives were involved in the shooting and were all placed on leave as per policy.

No one else was injured.

Hawes was wanted for questioning after he recently was accused of sexually molesting a juvenile female relative for seven years beginning in 2003.

Pubins said the victim was a juvenile during the entire time that the crimes took place. Now as an adult, she came forward with the allegations.

It is not believed that there are any other victims.

The investigation is still ongoing.
