PHOENIX -- Farmers' markets are becoming more and more popular. And the variety of foods they offer is more diverse than ever.
The wide array of choices can be a little intimidating for those of us who aren't chefs. But that's about to change. Chef Aaron Chamberlin from Phoenix Public Market gave us some advice on Tuesday's Good Morning Arizona.
He says to look for fruits and vegetables with a high water content, like melons. "This is exactly what you need in these temperatures," he tells us. "In the heat, you need a lot of water content."
Chef Aaron also demonstrated a seasonal dish, melon gazpacho, which is made with many ingredients from the farmers' market. Right now melons are in abundance in our state.
When looking for a melon, he has some advice on picking a good one. "Generally a good melon is heavy, because it's full of water," Chef Aaron says. " And also it smells. It has a nice fragrant smell."
Throughout the month of August, the Phoenix Public Market Café in downtown Phoenix is hosting a "Chef For A Day" contest. The contest will give one lucky guest (plus three friends) an inside look into navigating the farmers' market from a chef's perspective.
"You and three of your friends are going to come down," he explains. "We're going to shop with you at the farmers' market, we're going to cook with you in the kitchen. I'm going to teach you all kids of good skills, and then you're going to sit down and eat and drink, and you're going to have a great day."
To enter, simply leave behind a business card in the "Chef For A Day" jar located on the register counter, during your next visit to the Café, anytime through the end of August. The winner will be announced on Sunday, September 1, 2013.
Phoenix Public Market is located at 14 E. Pierce Street in Phoenix, just across from the Westward Ho. The open-air farmers' market is held Wednesdays from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and oSaturdays from 8:00 a.m. until noon.
