APACHE JUNCTION, Ariz. -- The Mesa Police Department launched an investigation Saturday after their officers shot a suspect in Apache Junction.
Saturday night, police identified the suspect as 33-year-old Travis Trisoliere. His criminal history stretches back several years and includes jail time.
Police said officers and the U.S. Marshals task force were trying to serve a warrant on Trisoliere on multiple charges, including aggravated assault on a police officer in Pinal County. He had reportedly been on the run for about three weeks when police found him Saturday and followed to the area of Broadway and Cedar.
Police said he was in the passenger seat of a pickup truck when he began reaching for what officers thought was a gun.
“I don’t know what happened, they just backed him into a corner and he feared for his life, and he had a right to, because look what they did to him,” said Katie Aaron, a friend of Trisoliere's who showed up at the shooting scene shortly after the shots were fired.
Steve Berry with the Mesa Police Department said the man had threatened police.
“He knew he was going back to jail and made comments that he wanted to shoot a police officer,” said Berry.
Police said they found a weapon inside the pickup truck.
The driver of the vehicle was taken into police custody for questioning.
