PHOENIX – A mental health patient barricaded himself inside his family's Phoenix home Tuesday morning after damaging vehicles and stripping off his clothes.

Phoenix police said the incident started with some felony damage in a neighborhood near Northern and 21st avenues.

Police said the 39-year-old man started walking through the neighborhood at about 4 a.m. He reportedly began breaking mailboxes and damaging cars.

A neighbor who confronted the man said he was cursing and yelling out random things. That neighbor called 911.

When police arrived, the man took off his clothes and then ran into a garage. Police said he started breaking out windows and throwing things then went into a home and started damaging that, as well.

Police made contact with the homeowners, who are the man's parents. They said something wasn't right with their son.

"He is not in a proper state of mental health," Sgt. Trent Crump said. "We will negotiate with him and hopefully get a peaceful surrender from him."

Police said there was a possibility that there were weapons inside the home.

Residents in the area were evacuated and the SWAT team was called to the scene. The SWAT team eventually entered the home and the hours-long standoff ended peacefully.
