PHOENIX -- Nationwide themed building competition Red Bull Creation has chosen its 2013 teams of top makers, hackers and builders to compete in its 72-hour live innovation battle.
It's been over 30 days since the qualifying round called for video submissions of a unique, interactive LED lighting art invention utilizing this year's custom-design piece of hardware, the "TurBULL Encabulator." Nearly 50 clever and originative videos were submitted by teams hailing from New York City to Maui in hopes their visions would be enough to punch their tickets to Brooklyn's annual discovery festival, Northside's NeXT Expo, in mid-June.
Experience prevailed this year as Red Bull Creation expert judges narrowed this year's participants to returning champs and other competition veterans, along with a few fresh faces.
Last year's victory in Red Bull Creation's "Game of Games" challenge wasn't enough to keep the Maker Twins from Mesa (@MurryTwins1 on Twitter) content to watch this year's competition from the sidelines. Their interactive multi-screen storefront video display in the middle of downtown Phoenix may have had some local establishments knocking on their door for advertising help.
Another 2012 standout, 1.21 Jigawatts from Minnesota felt the same itch for competition when they created their '80s pop-inspired, LED-lit, sensor-powered flying creation 99 (Red Bull)loons. Bringing the funk from Motown is three-time Red Bull Creation participants, i3 Detroit, who must've had the Northside Music Festival in mind when they created the LED beat making, "RainbowTron." Also making a comeback, fan favorite Virginians NorthStreet Labs and Chi-Town's MB Labs will also be joining this year's finalists in Brooklyn.
Now that the final six know they'll be going to Brooklyn's McCarren Park to participate in the 72-hour live build, they should probably have an idea of what they'll be building there right? Not quite. Teams will not know the build topic until 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 12.
After a night of planning, the teams will be allowed to solder their first circuit boards at 8 a.m. Thursday morning, but the tools must hit the ground by 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 15, when all six creations are required to be completed.
The following day, a panel of judges made up of the who's who in the maker scene will help decide which teams will get their piece of the $10,000 total cash purse. If you're not going to be in Brooklyn don't worry, Red Bull will be providing regular updates on the competition at creation.redbullusa.com.
