PHOENIX -- Holiday shoppers are becoming holiday shippers as they scramble to get presents sent to out of town loved ones before Christmas.

"I'm mailing packages to my brother and my sister, my mom and my dad's house," said Tammy Depetro who was in line Monday at the post office. "Spokane, Washington; Redding, California; Sacramento; and Reno, Nevada.

Officials with the United States Postal Service projected that Monday, Dec. 16 would be the busiest mailing day of the year.

"This is typically what we expect to be the busiest mailing day of the year," said Peter Hass with United States Postal Service. "It's typically the Monday of the week before the Christmas holiday."

Shoppers who need to ship gifts are running out of time.

"Actually this Friday the 20th is the last day we would recommend for people to mail their cards or letters first class mail," said Haas.

People can wait until Saturday, Dec. 21 to send gifts priority mail.

If you expensive or fragile items to ship, you could pay a company like Craters & Freighters in Tempe, Ariz. to do the work.

Each piano, piece of art, grandfather clock, or statue, get a custom made shipping container.

"We have wooden crates and we have boxes but it's how it's packed inside that container that makes the world of difference," said Dennis Davies with Craters & Freighters.

No matter what you're sending where for Christmas time is running out.
