PHOENIX -- A gas main break in northwest Phoenix Monday evening led to road closures and evacuations in the area.
The Phoenix Fire Department was called to a hazardous incident at 19th Avenue and Ocotillo Road. Construction crews working on the light rail expansion in the area apparently broke a 2-1/2-inch material gas line.
The break caused a gas leak, but that leak has since been secured. About 40 firefighters were at the scene on standby in case an explosion should occur.
Twenty people were evacuated from surrounding homes and apartment buildings, but they were allowed to return home a short time later.
One woman who lives nearby said folks in the area knew immediately that something was wrong.
"The smell hit us in the face," she said. "I mean you could smell the gas."
19th Avenue from Glendale Avenue to Bethany Home Road had to be closed.
