PHOENIX -- A Valley woman decided to try a free trial offer, but claimed it wound up costing her money anyway. So, she contacted 3 On Your Side's Gary Harper for help.
We see trial offers all the time. It's an incentive to get consumers to try a product.
In this particular case, the 14-day trial offer was for a weight-loss program and now one woman is out $160.
Linda Lindquist has come across a lot of TV commercials and they all seemed to be about losing weight, and that's exactly what Lindquist wanted to do.
"You get to a certain age and you can't quite get everything off," Lindquist said.
So, when Lindquist said she came across a website selling something called LipoSlim, she was very interested.
"And if you don't want to have surgery, a product that calls itself LipoSlim sounds like this might be the answer," Lindquist said.
Lindquist said she thought she had nothing to lose with a free trial offer.
"There was a 14-day free trial with a cleanse and they promised 'results,'" Lindquist said.
Lindquist said the company shipped her two bottles and all she had to pay was less than $5 each for shipping and handling.
But after trying the product, she saw no results and canceled all further shipments and returned the bottles within 14 days.
"I sent it back so quickly because I said, 'This isn't doing anything,'" Lindquist said.
Still, Lindquist was billed nearly $80 a bottle for a total of a 160 bucks, so much for that free trial offer.
So, 3 On Your Side got involved and called the toll-free number that was on Lindquist's bill.
A customer service representative, who was difficult to understand, wouldn't let us speak to a supervisor. However, she tried to convince 3 On Your Side that her supervisor would look into the matter.
Finally, we went to LipoSlim's Valley address listed with the Better Business Bureau. But when we arrived, we found a mail facility with their box number inside.
Lindquist said she'll probably never get her money back and has learned a lesson about trial offers.
"How, they're running their business and how they're not doing what they say and returning people their money is just so wrong," Lindquist said.
The company does spell out a pretty convincing return policy in their terms and conditions so we're not quite sure what went wrong here.
They also claimed they issued Lindquist a check back in December but Lindquist maintained she never received that check.
