FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- A Flagstaff grocery store was evacuated after a fire broke out Monday night.

Firefighters responded to the Bashas' store at the top of Humphreys Street about a mile from downtown at around 7 p.m. The grocery store is in a strip mall with about 20 other businesses.

Capt. Mark Johnson with the Flagstaff Fire Department said the fire likely started on the roof and spread very quickly.

The manager got everyone out of the Bashas' before firefighters arrived.

"Getting those folks out right away definitely headed off big problems," Johnson said.

Johnson said the supermarket has a large facade on the front to give it an appearance of a taller roof and there is a flat roof behind it with a very large space between the two areas, which is where the fire started.

Johnson said there was minor smoke damage to some of the adjoining businesses, but the majority of the damage was contained to the Bashas' store.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
