PHOENIX -- A Phoenix family is planning the funeral of a three-year-old boy who was struck and killed while sitting in his stroller last Thursday.
Jesus Alberto Chavez was the youngest of three. "He was always very happy and always the joy of everybody's life,” said Nicky Kielczewski.
His family called him Chuy for short.
Kielczewski said he was like a nephew to her. She said she was in the delivery room when he was born. "We counted his fingers and his toes and everybody was so happy," she said.
But on Thursday, his life ended too soon. "It's just not fair. He was three years old. He had his whole life ahead of him," said Kielczewski.
Chuy was with his babysitter when he was killed. They were on their way back to her home after a quick trip to the store. Police said a driver struck Chuy in his stroller and knocked his babysitter to the ground.
“We are all very sad about what happened," said Cesar Garza, the babysitter’s brother-in-law.
"There are no words to comfort anybody after they've lost their child," said Kielczewski.
The boy's family is finding comfort in his dog, Paris. "He loved his little dog,” said Kielczewski. “He chased around his little dog. He would just squeeze her."
They're keeping his favorite toys and blanket close. “We moved his Legos. His Legos are in the living room area, and the box stays there," said Kielczewski.
The family is also very moved by the community's support. "The outpouring of the community; she just wanted to say thank you to everybody for all of the support, and the letters they put at the scene. Although they didn't know him, everybody loved him," said Kielczewski.
The family is inviting the community to Chuy's funeral. The viewing is Friday from 10:00 a.m. to noon at Greenwood Memorial Lawn, located at 719 North 27th Avenue in Phoenix. Services follow at noon at the Serenity Chapel.
The family is also accepting donations to help cover costs of the funeral. You can donate at any Chase bank to Fabiola Arambula.
