PHOENIX -- Firefighters in North Phoenix found packages of explosives at the front door of their station Monday night.

On Tuesday morning, Phoenix police spokesman Sgt. Steve Martos said it appears to have been pyrotechnic material.

The Phoenix Police Department Bomb Squad began investigating and closed off a neighborhood on Seventh Street south of Greenway Parkway.

The explosives were not rigged or mixed to ignite, but fire officials describe the items as powder, tape and other material. When combined, the materials found can detonate.

"This stuff was not purchased legally," Fire Capt. Larry Nunez said.

Investigators said they found no note with the explosives and do not believe there was any malicious intent.

"This could be a situation where some guy was cleaning out a house, found this stuff and thought it'd be best to bring it to the fire station," Nunez added.

Still, they would like to talk to the person who dropped off the materials.
