SURPRISE, Ariz. -- It happens all too often in Arizona. Firefighters are called to rescue animals locked in cars.

But Surprise firefighters were in for a shock, when their most recent car rescue involved an exotic bird!

Last week, a woman called for help after she accidentally locked her keys in the car. Her cockatoo, Rusty, was stuck inside. The large exotic bird was lying flat in his cage, and was in obvious respiratory distress.

After crews freed the bird, the owner carried him inside, and called an emergency vet. Meantime, firefighters gave the bird oxygen,

At first, Rusty was not moving and not responding. But firefighters gave him oxygen, misted him with cool water, and packed his wings with ice packs.

Animal control officers arrived a short time later. After about 15 minutes, Rusty began perking up and responding. He eventually went to the vet, and a few days later was reportedly back to normal.
