PHOENIX -- Police are investigating what they believe to be a double homicide at a West Phoenix home.
Officers found the bodies of an 81-year-old man and his 64-year-old wife Wednesday afternoon at a home in the neighborhood of 35th Avenue and Bell Road. The caretaker for one of the victims called police to do a welfare check because nobody was answering repeated knocks on the door.
"Yesterday when this occurred they called police," said Sgt. Steve Martos with the Phoenix Police Dept. "We arrived, had to force entry into the home and sadly we located both victims inside with some obvious signs of trauma. We believe a violent encounter occurred resulting in their death."
Police identified the victims as William and Barbara Singer.
"We don't have a motive. No information on suspect or suspects that may be involved in this crime. We are still in the preliminary stages trying to determine what the motive might be," said Sgt. Martos.
William Singer was last seen on June 25.
"Detectives have determined this is not a murder-suicide event," Sgt. Martos said in an e-mail to media outlets. "Based on trauma and evidence at the scene, detectives have determined this to be a double homicide."
Martos did not provide any details, saying only that the couple had been married for more than 30 years but did not have any children in common.
"Homicide detectives are vigorously working this case, however have limited information to go on," Martos said.
