TEMPE, Ariz. --  The strike by transit bus drivers affecting tens of thousands of riders in Phoenix's eastern suburbs will head to a third day.

Valley Metro said Friday night that First Transit had productive negotiations with Amalgamated Transit Union, but Friday evening the union said they would only accept a one-year contract and ended negotiations.

All the talks so far have revolved around a three-year contract.

The strike began Thursday, shutting down 40 routes in Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa and Tempe, along with express routes from those cities to Scottsdale and Phoenix. The affected routes serve some 57,000 riders daily.

For up to date progress on the negotiations visit www.valleymetro.org.
