PHOENIX -- A judge set a $1 million bond for a woman accused of gunning down two men outside of Zipps sports bar over the weekend.
Jessica Wood, 29, is accused of targeting the men in a shooting police are calling “a random act of violence.”
Thomas Marcussen, 32, and James Swain, 44, attended a sporting event with two friends Friday and grabbed a couple of beers at CJ’s Talley’s bar and grill. The pair decided to leave just before midnight and went across the street to Zipps to have the employees call them a cab.
Police say while the pair waited on a bench outside of the sports bar, Wood approached them with a “semi-automatic handgun in a shooting stance.”
"This is when Miss Wood comes out through the parking lot, she pulls out a gun, and she shoots our victims," says Phoenix Police Officer James Holmes.
Marcussen was shot immediately, but Swain tried running away. Police say surveillance video shows Wood chasing him down, firing deliberately in his direction, striking him twice.
A witness ran up to intervene, grabbing Wood, and restraining her until authorities arrived.
"One witness took a chance, and he came up behind her, and took her down to the ground, and was able to disarm her and keep her there until the police got there," says Holmes.
Marcussen was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Swain is expected to recover. In court Monday, Marcussen’s brother Jeff offered a victim impact statement.
“I realize you don’t know what you have until it’s gone,” Jeff Marcussen said. “What has been taken from myself and my family and my friends is going to impact our lives forever.”
Phoenix police believe Wood was under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time of the incident. They are still investigating a possible motive for the shooting.
Earlier that evening, a woman matching Wood’s description was thrown out of CJ’s bar for throwing a beer on a patron. Police say Marcussen and Swain were in the bar at the same time, but they were not associated with the patron, and as far as investigators can tell, never had any contact with Wood.
