PHOENIX -- Authorities are investigating a dog attack in Phoenix that injured a 6-year-old boy Thursday afternoon.

Melissa Gable with the Maricopa County Animal Care and Control said the attack occurred near McKinley Street and 31st Avenue at about 1:30 p.m.

The boy apparently was visiting a home and playing in the backyard when the male pit bull mix entered through an open gate and attacked him, according to Gable.

The child was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries to his head and hand. The injuries were minor, according to Phoenix police.

The residents of the home have a black female pit bull that was tied up in the yard. It was not involved in the attack.

A 4-year-old child was also in the yard when the attack happened but was not injured.

The dog reportedly doesn't belong to the family or the occupants of the home and may be a stray. It didn't have a collar or identification tags and will be scanned for a microchip at an animal control center.

The dog is being held at the facility on bite quarantine where it will be monitored for any signs of rabies.
