PHOENIX -- A 13-year-old boy has died after being pulled from a swimming pool at a Phoenix apartment complex Sunday.
It happened at Bethany West Apartments near 35th Avenue and Bethany Home Road.
A resident told investigators she was taking out the trash when she saw the boy climbing the locked pool fence, which is more than 6 feet tall.
She said she went to inform the property manager, who was not in the office at the time, and returned to find the boy at the bottom of the pool.
Police said no one else was in the pool area at the time.
Residents pulled the boy, identified as Osman Abdi, out of the water and called 911 about 12:45 p.m.
Phoenix police administered CPR until paramedics arrived.
Phoenix Fire Capt. Tony Mure said paramedics arrived in less than three minutes but it is unknown how long the boy was underwater.
He was transported to a local pediatric hospital in extremely critical condition and later pronounced dead.
A surveillance camera captured video of Abdi climbing on the fence that surrounds the swimming pool.
"He never, never dared to go the pool. He never even mentioned the pool," said Juana Bautista who manages the apartment complex and has a son who was friends with Abdi. "So to me it's a big surprise that he went towards the pool."
