TEMPE, Ariz. – Tempe police said a 13-year-old boy was home alone when two males burglarized his family's apartment on Tuesday.
Police said two males broke into the home in the area of University Drive and Price Road at approximately 11:15 a.m. They reportedly broke in through a skylight while the boy hid in his room with the door locked.
The suspects began going through the house and one of them kicked in the teen's door. The suspect saw the boy and told him to cover his eyes and asked where the valuables were located, according to Lt. Mike Pooley.
The suspects continued to search the home for more than an hour.
At one point, the victim left his room, believing that the men had fled. He saw one of the suspects, who immediately told him to go back to the room and cover his head with a sheet. The boy complied and told the suspect his mother would be home soon. The suspect allegedly said that if she came home they would "take care of her," according to Pooley.
"So obviously this 13-year-old boy was very, very scared. He didn't know what to do," Pooley said.
The teen went back to his room and waited. A short time later, he heard his mother arrive home and ran out to her to tell her to get out of the house because two men were inside.
"It is very hard for somebody to comprehend what that little boy went through being 13 years old, wanting to protect his mom, doesn't know who these individuals are. It is extremely hard to understand the fear that he was feeling," Pooley said.
The mother and son left the residence and called police.
One suspect is described as a black male in his 20s, 5 feet 10 inches tall with a muscular build, wearing a red shirt with a white logo. The other suspect is described only as a black male in his 20s.
One of the suspects has a sleeve tattoo on his right arm.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Tempe Police Department.
