MARICOPA COUNTY, Ariz. -- Maricopa County Sheriff's Office detectives say they have found human body parts in a storm drain.
MSCO spokesman Officer Chris Hegstrom said workers who were cleaning the drain near Maricopa Garden Farms in the area of 43rd Avenue and Broadway Road saw what they believed to be a body early Wednesday morning. According to those workers, the body was at the bottom near the main artery of the drain system.
Deputies taped off the entrance to the drain and closed the intersection, but they had to wait until daybreak to go down and take a look.
Members of the technical rescue crews were finally able to go down into the drainage pipes, which is about 30 feet deep, at about 9 a.m.
Brandon Jones with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office confirmed the discovery of an additional bone, which was immediately turned over to the medical examiner's office.
The remaining drainage pipes have been cleared and the intersection was reopened at about 2 p.m.
The sheriff's office is waiting on the medical examiner for identification and other pertinent information.
