GILBERT, Ariz. -- A local veteran had his home remodeled to be more accessible for free thanks to Jared Allen's "Homes for Wounded Warriors Foundation."
The foundation has been remodeling veterans' homes to make them handicap accessible since Allen founded it in 2009. Gilbert's Cory Remsburg is the latest veteran to be helped by the project. Allen, a Valley resident when he's not playing for the Chicago Bears during football season, spoke with Remsburg on Skype at the home's unveiling.
"It's amazing to see the community come together for a purpose," Remsburg said.
Remsburg suffered a penetrating head wound while on his 10th deployment in the Middle East in 2009. Shrapnel lodged in his brain left Remsburg blind in his right eye and partially paralyzed.
Remsburg received the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart for his acts of merit and for being injured in the line of duty. President Obama spoke of Remsburg during his State of the Union address in January.
