911 call from car into Gilbert building

GILBERT, Ariz. – One person was killed and close to a dozen others were injured after a car crashed into a building in Gilbert Friday morning, according to the Gilbert Fire Department.

According to Gilbert police, an 87-year-old woman left a bank and hit a car in the parking lot then crashed through the window of Pima Medical Institute, which is located in a strip mall shopping center near Power and Baseline roads around 10 a.m.

The woman's vehicle traveled at least 25 feet inside the building, according to 3TV reporter Kristine Harrington.

The driver and passenger were not injured.

A massage class was underway in a classroom when the vehicle slammed into the building.

Twenty-two-year-old massage therapy student Lacey Gruntorad wound up losing her life.

Gilbert fire Capt. Mike Conner said two people were transported to local hospitals. Nine others received minor injuries.

Police found no signs of impairment. Detectives are still investigating the incident.

A tow truck responded to the scene to pull out the vehicle.
