PHOENIX -- Three suspects are in custody and facing a variety of charges after leading the Department of Public Safety on a high-speed chase.

It started shortly after 11 p.m. Wednesday on westbound Wild Horse Pass at Interstate 10. Officers deployed spike strips in an effort to stop the SUV, which was going faster than 90 mph at times. The attempt failed.

About 30 minutes into the pursuit, a DPS officer performed a PIT maneuver that caused  the driver of the SUV to lose control. The SUV rolled onto its side, according to DPS spokesman Raul Garcia, ending the chase in the area. 40th Street and Chandler Boulevard.

According to the DPS Duty Office, officers discovered and seized 45 pounds marijuana. The suspects reportedly had been throwing bales of pot out of the vehicle's windows as they fled.

Officers arrested the three people inside the SUV without further incident.

It is not clear what precipitated the chase. DPS has not released any information about the suspects, saying only that they were booked on suspicion of possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana for sale, transportation of marijuana for sale, aggravated assault, conducting an illegal enterprise, conspiracy, and felony flight.

Police officers from Phoenix, Mesa, Chandler and Gila River along with firefighters from Phoenix and Gila River were involved in the incident.
