PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. – Prescott Valley police officers performing a welfare check Sunday evening discovered two young children in a home with their dead father.
Police officers responded to a home in the 3800 block of Teri Court shortly before 7 p.m.
Neighbors said the 3-year-old boy and 2-year-old girl had been throwing bottles of water, cans, knives and other items from their second-story balcony for hours, according to police spokesman Sgt. Brandon Bonney.
Officers were unable to get the children to open the door for them so they entered through a window and found the 31-year-old father dead.
It is possible the children were in the home with their deceased father for most of the day, according to Bonney. Police believe they fed themselves fruit snacks.
It is not known why the kids were throwing the items from the balcony or if it was an attempt to get someone's attention.
The cause and manner of death are under investigation, but police suspect that drugs could have contributed to the father's death.
The children's mother died of cancer about a year ago.
The children are in the care of Child Protective Services. The man's name has not been released.
