1 dead after wrong-way crash on SR 51

PHOENIX -- One person died and two others were seriously injured after a head-on collision on the southbound state Route 51 near Bell Road in Phoenix early Sunday morning.

According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, a vehicle was traveling the wrong way on the freeway from Northern Avenue to Bell Road just before 5 a.m.

The vehicle then smashed head-on into a black SUV.

Three people were transported to the hospital where one later died.

The freeway was closed from about 6 a.m. to 9:15 a.m., according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

Investigators are trying to determine if drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash.

The name of the victim has not been released at this time.
