TEMPE, Ariz. -- Tempe police say the man who was arrested after allegedly throwing bottles of wine at an officer also bit a paramedic and a nurse.

According to the probable cause statement, 40-year-old William Paxton Barrett illegally entered the House of Tricks restaurant early Monday morning.

Police said Barrett proceeded to damage both the interior and exterior of the building, resulting in repairs that will likely cost about $10,000.

A passerby witnessed Barrett causing damage to the restaurant and called police.

The first officer to arrive on scene was reportedly assaulted by Barrett as he began throwing objects, including bottles of wine.

The officer was struck on the nose by one of the bottles, and fearing for his safety he discharged his firearm and shot Barrett in the hand.

Barrett was subsequently detained, and taken to Scottsdale Osborn Hospital for treatment.

While on the way to the hospital, police said Barrett bit one of the paramedics in the right buttock. He also bit a nurse on the forearm when he arrived at the hospital.

Barrett was arrested after being discharged from the hospital.

Police said an attempt to interview Barrett revealed that he drinks alcohol and does not remember what took place.
