Sheriff's office investigates Eloy police shooting

ELOY, Ariz. (AP) -- The Pinal County Sheriff's Office is investigating a shooting involving an Eloy police officer.

The shooting happened early Sunday after officers responded to a burglary alarm at a business. The owner told officers someone took items from outside the business.

Officers began walking through the surrounding neighborhoods to see if they could find the suspect or the missing property.

That's when a man identified as 25-year-old Victor Arenas yelled at Officer Richard Timmes for shining his flashlight at him. Authorities say Arenas then pointed a gun at the officer.

Timmes yelled at Arenas to put the gun down but he fired at the officer instead. Timmes returned fire, hitting Arenas. The man ran a short distance before collapsing. He was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Eloy man killed in officer-involved shooting

ELOY, Ariz. -- New details are being released about an officer-involved shooting in Eloy this past weekend.

Victor Arenas was killed in the shooting outside his home early Sunday morning, according to police.

Arenas' family said he went outside with his gun about 4 a.m. because he thought an intruder was trying to enter his home.

According to his brother, Arenas heard a noise in the front yard and asked who was there, but the officer did not identify himself.

The family said they heard gunshots, and Arenas ran back inside and fell on the kitchen floor. Arenas' brother began CPR.

The officer was not injured.

Now, the Pinal County Sheriff's Office says that Arenas fired the first shot.

According to PCSO, Arenas fired his handgun at the officer and the officer returned fire. Arenas was struck by one of the bullets fired by the officer.

Arenas reportedly ran a short distance toward the rear of the residence and fell to the ground.  The officer performed CPR on Arenas until medical personnel arrived on scene.

Arenas was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
