PHOENIX -- Rescuers airlifted a man who was hurt while hiking on a desert trail near South Mountain on Friday morning.

The man injured his head, according to a spokesman for the Phoenix Fire Department.

Firefighters placed the victim in a basket and he was lifted out of the desert by a line lowered from a helicopter.

A firefighter accompanied the victim as he was flown to an ambulance parked in an Ahwatukee neighborhood.

Details on the hiker's condition are not available.
