PHOENIX -- Bond has been set for the convicted felon accused of shooting a Phoenix police officer last Sunday night.

Brandon McCabe, 28, was in court Thursday where his bond was set at $1 million for allegedly trying to kill Officer Peter Bennett.

Bennett was patrolling in the area of North 21st Avenue and West Georgia Avenue on the evening of Jan. 6 when he saw McCabe riding a bike without a required light.

Bennett attempted to stop and speak with McCabe, but McCabe ignored the officer’s commands and eventually fled on foot.

Bennett caught up with McCabe, but he was reportedly shot in the right side of his chin by a gun that McCabe was carrying.

McCabe allegedly stood over Bennett and fired several more shots, before eventually running away when Bennett returned fire.

McCabe was subsequently found hiding in the shed of a nearby home and taken into police custody.

Bennett’s ballistic vest stopped two rounds that struck his chest, but he still suffered injuries to his face, right hip, and left forearm.

McCabe, who is prohibited from possessing a firearm, is now facing multiple felonies, including attempted first-degree murder and misconduct involving weapons.

McCabe is due back in court on Jan. 17.
