PHOENIX -- One person is in the hospital after a fire tore through a Phoenix mobile home early Monday morning.

Firefighters were called to the home on Grovers Avenue east of 16th Street at about 3:45 a.m.

While crews were able to knock down the flames quickly, the home was destroyed.

The homeowner said he was in a detached garage when he heard his fiancée and her mom screaming.

"By the time I got from the door to the bedroom, I could see the flames shooting into the hallway,"  John Wilhite said.

The trio grabbed one of their cats as they ran from the burning home. Three other cats are missing.

Wilhite's fiancée suffered minor burns to her feet and lower legs and was taken to a local hospital.

"She should be OK. It was just a precautionary transport," said Capt. Scott McDonald of the Phoenix Fire Department.

Firefighters say mobile homes tend to burn very quickly and the flames often spread to nearby homes because the lots are generally quite close together.

"We always worry about these fires spreading to other mobile homes," McDonald said. "These lots are a good size so we were able to keep it to the original trailer that it started in."

While the home is a total loss, firefighters saved the outbuildings -- an RV, offices and workshops -- behind it on the property.

Investigators are trying to determine what sparked the fire.
