NEW YORK -- The man who captured the nation’s attention by receiving a pair of boots from a New York City police officer is a little better off than previously thought.
Jeffrey Hillman became an Internet sensation when he was photographed barefoot and on the ground receiving the boots on a cold New York night.
When the photo was first released to the public, it was assumed that Hillman was without a home.
It turns out, however, that Hillman has been living in Veteran Affairs housing since last year, and has an apartment in the Bronx.
Hillman spoke to The New York Times earlier this week and said he had hidden the $100 pair of boots because “they are worth a lot of money.”
Hillman added that he’s grateful for the gift, but would like to be compensated for the photo because it was posted online without his permission.
