PHOENIX -- Phoenix police officers fatally shot a man Saturday night after he allegedly threatened them with what appeared to be a wooden table leg.

Police said four officers were called to an apartment complex in the area of Glendale and 19th avenues just after 9 p.m. to assist with a fight.

Officers spoke with the person who called police and were informed that the suspect, identified as Zachariah Pithan, 22, had been banging on the caller’s door and threatening them with bodily harm.

Police visited the suspect’s apartment and noticed that the door was broken. Officers called out to the man, but he refused to leave his apartment.

One of the officers reportedly tried to remove Pithan from his residence, which prompted him to grab the officer and pull him inside.

A fight between Pithan and police broke out, and at one point during the altercation the suspect was able to break free and grab what looked like a broken, wooden table leg with a pointed tip.

Police said Pithan went to hit one of the officers with the table leg when he was shot by another officer.

Phoenix fire was immediately called to the scene, but Pithan eventually died from his injuries.

Investigators went on to speak with several witnesses who said Pithan had been acting in a bizarre and aggressive manner all day.

He had also allegedly threatened multiple residents and destroyed mailboxes.
