PHOENIX -- A whopper of a winter storm is moving toward Arizona. Temperatures will tumble and rain and snow will blanket the state.

Today, look for partly sunny skies and highs in the low 70s in the Valley. Breezy conditions are expected to develop today and tonight, becoming windier tomorrow. There is a Wind Advisory and Red Flag Warning posted for parts of Arizona today and tonight. Expect strong southwesterly winds as the cold front approaches and moves through the state.

Rain is possible tonight and chances increase tomorrow morning for the Valley. We could see rain totals between 0.1 and 0.5 inch.

Snow levels will tumble to about 3,000 feet. Elevations above 4,000 feet could pick up a couple of inches, while elevations above 6,000 feet, including Flagstaff, could pick up a foot of fresh powder. Higher elevations on the Rim could pick up nearly 18 inches. Winter Weather Advisories and a Winter Storm Warning have been issued in advance of the storm for the high country.

The storm will bring very cold weather. Valley highs are expected to stay well below average in the 50s for both Wednesday and Thursday.

Dry weather should return by Thursday, and temperatures rebound to the 60s by the weekend.
