PHOENIX -- Volunteers gathered in Phoenix Saturday prepared to collect at least 100,000 pounds of recyclable materials.

Keep Phoenix Beautiful, an affiliate of the Keep America Beautiful nonprofit organization, held its "I Recycle Phoenix" event at Christown-Spectrum Mall near 17th Avenue and Bethany Home Road.

Items accepted for recycling included various electronics, holiday decorations, office supplies, batteries, ink cartridges, and clothing.

“Great time to clean out your closet,” said Tom Waldeck, Executive Director of Keep Phoenix Beautiful.

Waldeck expected to collect 50,000 pounds of electronics alone.

"Anything with a cord, we can recycle," he said.

Waldeck expected to collect another 50,000 pounds of shredded paper, as the event provided on-site document shredding.

Volunteers also collected food for St. Vincent de Paul.

“They need to replenish their shelves and their food banks,” Waldeck said.
