MESA, Ariz. -- A Mesa couple is trying to come to grips with the loss of one of their beloved pets after a giant swarm of bees attacked their three dogs.
Christiane Giovanetti said she and her husband are still in shock about the attack that now has them hoping they won't have to say goodbye to another one of their dogs.
“They were throwing themselves at the basement window doing anything they could to get these bees off of them,” said Giovanetti. “I went to go run across the street to get a hose from the neighbor and then I got attacked when I ran out of the house.”
Giovanetti called 9-1-1, and firefighters arrived on scene in full bee suits.
Two of their dogs were treated by emergency responders, but it was unfortunately too late for the couple’s black lab.
“We wanted to have hope but by the time we took her to the vet she was in really, really bad shape,” said Giovanetti.
Unfortunately, Giovanetti said their two other dogs aren’t out of the woods quite yet.
“It could happen anytime, the clots going through the kidney and they could just bleed out," she explained.
It’s believed that the swarm of bees came from a vacant home where a hoarder used to live.
Bee experts advise everyone to be on the lookout, as this is prime season for bee swarms.
