CHANDLER, Ariz. -- A 6-year-old Valley boy is battling his cancer with spirit -- and a light saber.

Jack Welch loves to run and play but less than three years ago, he was stuck in a hospital.
"They give you all this medicine that kills all of the germs,” he said.

Jack was diagnosed with leukemia at age 4, and his love of Star Wars inspired the slogan, "Jack Strikes Back." It's not only echoed by his family and friends but printed on T-shirts which raise money for cancer research.

"It gave everybody kind of a rallying cry,” said his father, Keith Welch. “Jack being the good and cancer being the evil."

Jack is now in remission but continues his fight against cancer daily.

"Jack takes oral chemo every day, he gets IV chemo once a month, and he gets a spinal tap every 90 days," Welch said.

The boy's cancer battle inspired Welch to help another young Star Wars fan in Germany fight leukemia. He donated bone marrow to the boy last year.

"The things that just made the hair on my arm stand up was it was a Star Wars theme as well that they had chosen to ... use as a mantra for their son," Welch said.

Jack's battle is also uniting his friends, who will join him in Saturday's Run to Fight Children's Cancer at Grand Canyon University. Jack will be carrying a light saber and wearing a superhero cape.
