PHOENIX -- A homeless man was assaulted outside a Phoenix convenience store Thursday night and police are asking for help identifying and locating the suspect.

Police officers were called to the AM/PM store near McDowell Road and 27th Avenue just after 8 p.m. and found the victim. He was transported to an area hospital where he is listed in extremely critical condition.

Police said the suspect entered the store prior to the assault. After exiting he approached the victim, who was standing by a nearby bus stop. The suspect walked up to the victim, shouted a profanity at him and punched him on the side of the head then fled the scene.

Police have not determined a motive.

The victim has yet to be identified, but he is believed to be homeless and approximately 70 years old.

Police released photos of the suspect and are asking anyone with information related to the crime to contact the Phoenix Police Department's Homicide Unit at 602-262-6141. Call Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS to remain anonymous.
