GLENDALE, Ariz. -- The 80-store Tanger Outlet Mall opened Thursday in Glendale to huge crowds of shoppers.
Stores like Banana Republic, H&M, Calvin Klein, Polo, Brooks Brothers, and Nike anchor the complex, which sits just north of University of Phoenix Stadium on Glendale Avenue.
Crews broke ground in March, creating 2,000 construction jobs. With its opening, 900 people have new part-and-full-time retail jobs.
An estimated 5 million people are expected to shop at the new mall each year.
Long lines formed outside stores like Coach and H&M early Thursday morning.
The Tanger company built its newest outlet mall in Glendale, which happens to have the highest combined city/county/state sales tax of any large city in the country, at 10.3 percent. By comparison, Phoenix, which also ranks high on the sales tax list, is at 9.3 percent.
The new mall is projected to bring in about $2.5 million in sales tax to the cash-strapped City of Glendale each year.
