(AP) -- NASA is showing off a spectacular video -- recorded just days ago -- of a flare erupting from the sun.
The flare occurred on April 2, and it was recorded by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, which was launched several years ago and is being used to study the sun and impact on Earth, as well as near-Earth space.
NASA says the eruption was a mid-level flare, just a fraction of the most powerful ones that occur from time to time.
It says the flare's harmful radiation can't pass through our atmosphere and affect people on the ground. It also says these sorts of flares can disturb Earth's atmosphere in the layer where GPS and communications signals travel.
