SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Many families have a stash of old sports equipment just collecting dust in their garages and attics. And now is the perfect time to put that old stuff to good use.

Organizers of the South Scottsdale Little League are hoping for some holiday donations. The League says 65 percent of its players qualify for a scholarship into their program because they're on the free lunch program. That means many parents can't afford baseball basics, like bats, gloves and cleats.

So they asked for help from their neighbors: a baseball league in North Scottsdale.

"It was jaw-dropping once we started having this conversation about the need and how great it was, and how these guys are right at our back door, and we had no idea," says Tanya Terry, a North Scottsdale Little League parent.

The Cal Ripkin Little League is holding an equipment collection drive this weekend. It got rained out a couple of weeks ago, so it's been rescheduled for this Saturday.

You can drop off equipment at Aztec Park in Scottsdale, at 100th Street and Frank Lloyd Wright. The event runs all day Saturday, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
