AVONDALE, Ariz. -- A Phoenix man is behind bars on a second-degree murder charge for allegedly shooting an Avondale father on Friday evening.

Avondale Police said 31-year-old Thomas Davis Jr. has been booked into the Maricopa County 4th Avenue Jail for killing 44-year-old Albert Thomas Jr.

Avondale police said they received two 911 calls from the area of 117th Avenue and Jefferson Street within seconds of each other on Friday evening.

One call came from someone who was reporting a domestic dispute. The other call was from someone who reported gunfire.

One neighbor described what she saw when she arrived home.

"I saw him lying there and they were trying to give him CPR, sad," said Sharon Voss.

Police said Thomas died on the scene. Voss described the victim as a nice neighbor with several children who lived with him.

"It's very sad. You never know what's going on in people's lives that makes this the last resort and that's the hard part about this," said Sgt. Brandon Busse with the Avondale Police Dept.

Family friends told 3TV Thomas and Davis knew each other.

“They were fighting before; it was an ongoing thing,” said a friend of Thomas' children.

“He was a good father, always talking to my kids,” said Tamarka Yarbrough whose daughters are close with Thomas' family.

Police spent hours investigating Friday night, as Jefferson Street near 117th Avenue remain taped off.

Meantime, those who know Thomas are trying to come to terms with the loss.

"It's an awful situation and it's horrible and I don't understand how somebody could do something like that and I just feel for that family and my thoughts and prayers are with them," said Voss.
