GILBERT, Ariz. -- What was once a dream home is now a distant memory for one former Arizona family.
Nicole Okvath and her loved ones moved into a $1.3 million Gilbert home back in 2005 thanks to the ABC series “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.”
Okvath’s daughter was battling cancer at the time, and ABC told the family that they wanted to lend a helping hand.
“I thought it was a joke. I told them this is not a joking matter. My daughter’s really ill and I can’t handle this,” said Okvath. “They said no, we want to know more and we want to do more for your family.”
The Okvath’s decided to move into the home, but before long the bills associated with the property became too much.
A divorce and financial difficulties ultimately forced Okvath to sell the home for just a fraction of what it was worth.
Okvath now lives with her children in Arkansas, where she’s getting a much needed fresh start.
“I felt it was impossible for the kids to start a life based on the mistakes that I had made with the house,” said Okvath. “And plus my mother was dying of colon cancer and she passed away last year so yeah I needed a fresh start. I needed to go to her right away. That’s one reason why I pushed to sell the house and I didn’t care what price I got for it.”
On Saturday, Okvath sold the remaining items that came with the house. The money will benefit her kids.
