PHOENIX -- National Geographic Polar Explorer Borge Ousland has experienced more cold weather than most would ever want to.
Not only has he sailed the Northwest and Northeast Passage, Ousland was the first to cross Antarctica solo. Ousland also took a trip to the North Pole in 1994 that he said was one of the hardest.
“I also did a winter trip to the North Pole in total darkness in 2006 so that was quite…that was quite difficult,” said Ousland.
Formerly a member of Norway’s Marinejeger, which is the equivalent to an American Navy Seal, Ousland took skills from this profession and learned to make it through these dangerous adventures.
“Not just the physical part but also to find solutions to problems that arise which you don’t fully expect so that’s a big part of it,” he said.
You can hear more about Ousland's adventures tonight at the Mesa Arts Center where he will be speaking as a part of the National Geographic Live Speaker Series.
The Mesa Arts Center is located at One East Main Street in Mesa. Tickets start at $26. Tickets can be purchased online or by phone at 480-644-6500.
