PEORIA, Ariz. -- There was big birthday celebration at the Hammer Crossfit gym on Wednesday morning.
David Caplan, a member of that gym for nearly three years, turned 80.
"Being here and working out is the best thing that I have ever done in my life," Caplan told the other gym members after they sang "Happy Birthday" to him.
Caplan's son is a Crossfit instructor who encouraged his father to try the intense workout.
"I wanted him to get some exercise so I found this gym for him and they've embraced him," said John Caplan.
John said his dad does the Crossfit workout three days a week, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
"It's definitely hard but it's scalable and there's something for everybody. Anybody from 80 years old down to 10 years old can do Crossfit," said John. "When he doesn't come he feels bad. He feels nervous like 'oh my gosh I'm going to forget what I've learned.'"
The owner of the gym said David is dedicated to the program.
"He's extraordinary in his motivation. He's wonderful to work with," said Kirez Reynolds.
David, a retired attorney with NASA, said he got motivated to exercise when he realized he gained 30 pounds in six years after he quit playing tennis.
"It's a nice way to work out and this is a nice gym and people are always helpful," said David.
