PHOENIX -- Two members of the Phoenix Police Department's SWAT team were shot Saturday night, according to department spokesman Sgt. Steve Martos.

They are both expected to survive.

The shooting happened at a condominium complex near 35th Avenue and Greenway Road in North Phoenix at around 7 p.m.

Officers were in the area after responding to a report of a suspicious person at approximately 4 p.m.

When police arrived on scene, they encountered a 30-year-old man who was yelling at them to go away and that he did not want to go back to prison.

During the incident, police saw the suspect reach into his backpack and pull out a handgun.

Officers and SWAT members attempted to negotiate with the man for three hours as he stood at the front doorway of a condominium, but were unsuccessful.

After the three-hour standoff officers tried to place the suspect under arrest, but an exchange of gunfire erupted during the attempt.

The suspect, identified as Lance Danielson, was shot and died at the scene.

The suspect's ex-wife lives in the complex but she was not home at the time of the incident.

Police believe that Danielson was upset after being evicted from this location the night before.

One of the wounded officers is a woman with 15 years on the force. The other officer is a man with 11 years on the force.

The female officer remains hospitalized. The other officer was struck in his ballistic vest and was treated and released Saturday night.
