Road Closures

Weekend Freeway Restrictions in Phoenix Area (August 22-25)

Several projects to add new lanes along Phoenix area freeways will require closures or lane restrictions this weekend (August 22-25). The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) recommends drivers use alternate routes and allow extra travel time while the following restrictions are in place:

Westbound I-10 narrowed between US 60 interchange and SR 143 for completion of Broadway Curve widening project. The freeway will be narrowed to one lane from 9 p.m. Friday to noon Saturday (Aug. 23) and will be narrowed to three lanes from noon Saturday to 5 a.m. Monday (Aug. 25). DETOUR: Drivers are strongly encouraged to use alternate routes and allow extra travel time.

Westbound US 60 narrowed to one lane through the I-10 interchange from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday (Aug. 25) for completion of Broadway Curve widening project. Westbound I-10 on-ramp at Baseline Road closed. Westbound I-10 exit to northbound SR 143 closed. DETOUR: Use alternate routes and allow extra travel time. East Valley drivers traveling to Phoenix or Sky Harbor International Airport can use northbound Loop 101 (Price Freeway) to westbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway). Westbound I-10 access to Sky Harbor also available at Buckeye Road.

Project benefit: The completion of a new westbound right lane along I-10 between US 60 and State Route 143 will improve traffic flow at the Broadway Curve by providing drivers with more room to merge on and off the freeway.

Eastbound Loop 101 (Pima Freeway) closed between Tatum Boulevard and Hayden Road from 11 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday (Aug. 25) for start of carpool lane construction. DETOUR: Drivers are strongly encouraged to use southbound State Route 51 to Cactus Road or another freeway alternative to avoid extreme congestion. A single lane on Loop 101 may open Saturday between Scottsdale and Hayden roads to help alleviate heavily congested traffic.

Project benefit: This project marks the final segment of Loop 101 HOV lanes under construction. The Tatum Boulevard to Princess Drive segment will connect 38 miles of continuous carpool lanes when complete next year.

Southbound I-17 narrowed to one lane between Jomax and Happy Valley roads from 9 p.m. Friday to 7 a.m. Saturday (Aug. 23) for freeway widening work. DETOUR: Please slow down and merge safely in the work zone.

I-17 closed in both directions overnight at Carefree Highway (State Route 74) from 10 p.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday (Aug. 25) for interchange construction work. DETOUR: Traffic detoured along the interchange ramps at Carefree Highway.

Project benefit: ADOT is adding new lanes and interchanges along I-17 from Loop 101 to the Carefree Highway to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion. The project is expected to be complete in 2009.

Eastbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) narrowed to three lanes between Priest Drive and Mill Avenue from 11:30 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday (Aug. 25) for bridge work. Eastbound on-ramp at Center Parkway also closed. DETOUR: Drivers should use Priest Drive or other alternate routes.
