The Sunset Point Rest Area will be closed during overnight hours twice this week, as work continues on paving the rest area frontage road.
The closures will take place from 7 p.m. until 8 a.m. starting Sept. 30 until Oct. 1, and again from Oct. 1 until Oct. 2. No vehicles will be allowed to enter the rest area.
Lane restrictions are scheduled on Interstate 17 just north of Sunset Point during the closures; however, pilot cars will not be in use during these restrictions. Both southbound lanes through the Black Canyon Hill downgrade will be open and the mandatory brake check for large trucks will be temporarily lifted. The brake check will resume at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 5 and will be strictly enforced.
During the past month, crews from the Arizona Department of Transportation have been working at night to repave the southbound lanes of I-17. Once crews complete the work at the rest area, the repaving work will resume between 7 p.m. and 8 a.m. Mondays through Thursdays. A pilot car will lead groups of vehicles down Black Canyon Hill. Lane closures will be required to allow equipment and workers room to complete the paving in a safe and efficient manner.
The project is scheduled for completion in January. For more information regarding this project, or to receive weekly construction e-updates, please call the project hotline at 1-866-751-2083 or e-mail prescottdistrictupdates@azdot.gov.
