PHOENIX -- Two Valley freeways will close midday Friday for the funeral procession for fallen Maricopa County Sheriff’s Deputy William Coleman. Drivers can expect the restrictions in Central and North Phoenix to affect the State Route 51 (Piestewa Freeway) and a section of Loop 101.

The Arizona Department of Transporatation (ADOT), along with other law enforcement agencies, including the Arizona Department of Public Safety, will work to coordinate the planned freeway closures.

The funeral will take place at North Phoenix Baptist Church, at Central Avenue and Bethany Home Road. From there, expect the eastbound lanes of Bethany Home Road to be closed around 11 a.m. as the procession proceeds from the church to the State Route 51. The procession will then travel northbound on the SR 51 and, eventually, westbound on the Loop 101, to the Phoenix Memorial Park, near Beardsley and Central Avenue.

According to ADOT, the following closures will be in place for the procession:

*NB SR 51 will be closed between I-10 and Loop 101 starting at approximately 11 a.m.

*WB Loop 101 closed between SR 51 and Seventh Avenue (north Phoenix) starting at approximately 11:30 a.m.

Times are approximate and subject to change depending on length of service.

Drivers should consider using NB I-17 as and alternate route while NB SR 51 is closed. Surface streets like Cave Creek and Tatum could also serve at alternate routes. WB Loop 101 traffic can go south on Tatum Boulevard or SR 51 and use WB Union Hills Drive or Bell Road to NB Seventh Avenue to reconnect with Loop 101.
