PHOENIX -- Whether you're headed to Las Vegas, San Diego or just staying home for Spring Break, the Arizona Department of Transportation advises drivers allow extra travel time around freeway construction zones.
Crews are working to add new lanes, bridges and other improvements along several highways this spring, requiring some restrictions. Drivers are urged to use caution, plan ahead and consider alternate routes while the following restrictions are in place:
Phoenix Area: Westbound Interstate 10 (from Tucson) narrowed to one lane between Wild Horse Pass and Chandler Boulevard from 10 p.m. Friday to 6 p.m. Saturday (March 19) for High Occupancy Vehicle lane bridge construction. Drivers are encouraged to allow extra time and adjust travel plans if possible to avoid delays. Note: Crews this weekend will shift two lanes of westbound I-10 traffic to a temporary bypass in order to safely complete a new elevated bridge connecting HOV lanes between I-10 and the Loop 202 Santan Freeway.
California Travel: Interstate 10 narrowed to one lane in both directions at the Hassayampa River (Milepost 105), approximately 40 miles west of downtown Phoenix, for bridge improvements. Please allow extra time during peak travel periods, including weekend afternoons. Project is scheduled for completion this summer.
San Diego Travel: Interstate 8 narrowed to one lane in both directions in Yuma area from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday for paving. Please allow extra travel time and be prepared to merge safely approaching work zone.
Las Vegas Travel: US 93 new lane construction between Wikieup and I-40 requires intermittent delays of approximately 15 minutes from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Drivers on US 93 can also expect brief delays south of Hoover Dam from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 21 – April 1 for lane striping along new section of four-lane highway. Please allow extra travel time and obey reduced speed limit in work zone.
Phoenix to Tucson Travel: Interstate 10 narrowed to one lane in both directions overnight between I-8 and State Route 87 near Casa Grande from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday though Thursday nights for new lane construction. Please allow extra travel time and obey reduced speed limit in work zone.
Tucson Area: Interstate 10 narrowed to one lane in both directions overnight between Kino Parkway and Valencia Road from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday nights during March for pavement work. Please allow extra travel time during overnight restrictions.
