PHOENIX -- A woman is dead after an SUV hit her while she was crossing the street in the Sunnyslope area Thursday morning.
It happened at Seventh Street and Dunlap Avenue.
The driver who hit the woman stopped and stayed at the scene like he was supposed to.
Police were talking to that driver, but at this point, they do not believe impairment was a factor. That man, who was on his way to work at the time of wreck, most likely will not face charges, police said.
According to Sgt. Tommy Thompson of the Phoenix Police Department, the woman was not in a crosswalk when the SUV hit her. Rather, she was standing in the reverse lane in the middle of the road about 300 feet from the crosswalk at Alice Avenue.
Police have not released any details about the victim, but a friend of hers told 3TV's Gibby Parra that she had been transient for about 10 years. That friend, who did not want to be identified, also said the woman is originally from New Mexico and that is where her family is.
Police are working on notifying her next of kin.
Seventh Street was closed between Dunlap and Alice avenues while police conducted their investigation.
