GILBERT, Ariz. -- A water main break is causing some traffic headaches in downtown Gilbert.
It happened Wednesday on Gilbert Road at Vaughn Avenue, north of Elliot Road.
Construction crews working on some street repairs accidentally drilled into the water pipe, causing water to gush into the street.
It was about four hours before the water could be turned off. Gilbert Road was closed for several hours, creating a traffic nightmare.
The situation had improved by Thursday morning.
While the break has been fixed and the water is no longer flowing, the streets are still muddy. Traffic is getting through the intersection, but only one lane is open in each direction.
As the morning goes on an traffic increases, delays are likely.
3TV traffic reporter Gina Maravilla advised people to avoid the area if possible, suggesting Val Vista Drive or Lindsay Road on the east side or Cooper Road on the west side. Guadalupe and Warner roads will keep you north and south of the mess.
